Ventilation in apartments with vinyl windows: how to avoid stale air

Why vinyl windows create ventilation problems

Old wooden windows always had micro-gaps through which air constantly circulated. This was natural ventilation. Vinyl windows, on the other hand, provide perfect tightness — and this is their main advantage for insulation, but at the same time a serious problem for indoor climate. In Kyiv apartments, where most buildings have central ventilation, this problem manifests itself especially acutely.

What happens when windows are airtight:

  • Carbon dioxide accumulates in the room
  • Oxygen levels decrease
  • A feeling of stuffiness appears
  • Sleep quality deteriorates
  • Headaches and fatigue may occur
  • Mold appears on walls due to excess moisture

Fact: According to the World Health Organization, indoor air quality can be 2-5 times worse than outdoor air if proper air exchange is not provided.

Solving the ventilation problem

Fortunately, there are several effective ways to ensure normal air exchange in an apartment with vinyl windows:

1. Ventilation valves

This is the most effective solution. There are two main types:

Supply valves — installed directly in the window frame and provide fresh air supply. They can be:

  • Manual — with adjustable air supply
  • Automatic — respond to humidity and temperature levels
  • Combined — combine both functions

Exhaust valves — installed in the wall or ventilation duct and provide removal of stale air.

2. Micro-ventilation

Most modern vinyl windows have a micro-ventilation function. When the handle is turned to a 45° angle, the sash moves slightly away from the frame, creating a gap for air exchange. This allows air to circulate without significant heat loss.

Advantages of micro-ventilation:

  • No additional equipment needed
  • Can be used at any time
  • Minimal heat loss
  • Easy to use

3. Proper airing

Even without additional equipment, you can ensure normal ventilation by following simple rules:

  • Air the apartment 2-3 times a day for 10-15 minutes
  • Create a cross-draft — open windows on opposite sides of the apartment
  • In winter, air more frequently but for shorter periods — 5-10 minutes

Tip: The most effective airing occurs when windows in the room and kitchen are open — this creates air flow through the apartment.

How to choose a ventilation valve

When choosing a ventilation valve, pay attention to the following parameters:

ParameterOptimal value
Capacity20-40 cu.m/hour per person
Noise levelNo more than 30 dB
Heat lossMinimal
Adjustment methodManual or automatic

Best ventilation valve manufacturers:

  • Aerok (Ukraine)
  • Vents (Ukraine)
  • KWE (Germany)
  • Reventon (Russia)

The cost of installing a ventilation valve together with installation ranges from 1500 to 4000 UAH depending on the type and complexity of work. In Kyiv, prices may vary depending on the district and installation complexity.

Common ventilation mistakes

Many people, trying to solve the problem, make typical mistakes:

❌ Blocked ventilation ducts Check the draft in the ventilation grilles. If a paper sheet doesn’t stick to the grille — the duct is blocked and needs cleaning.

❌ Drying laundry indoors A single pair of wet shoes releases up to 300ml of moisture. Laundry on a clothesline in the room is a serious source of humidity.

❌ Using airtight film on windows Some install airtight film for insulation, completely blocking air exchange. This leads to catastrophic deterioration of air quality.

❌ Permanently closed windows Even with ventilation valves, it’s recommended to periodically open windows for full airing.

Important: If you have ventilation valves installed, don’t close them. They’re designed for constant operation and provide the minimum necessary air exchange even in a closed room.

Frequently Asked Questions

Vinyl windows seal tightly and don't let air through, unlike old wooden windows that had gaps. This disrupts natural air circulation.

A ventilation valve is a device installed in the window frame or wall that provides a constant supply of fresh air without needing to open the window.

The air exchange rate is 30 cubic meters of air per hour per person. In bedrooms this rate can be lower, and in kitchens — higher.

Yes, some valve models can be installed by yourself. However, for proper installation and capacity selection, it's better to consult a specialist.
